Happy new Year!

Hello everyone!

Let 2026 begin! I hope everyone had a great 2025, had fun, enjoyed themselves, and reflected upon last year. We have a whole new year ahead, so the show must go on!

If you've only recently started following the articles, last week I wrote an article highlighting the events of 2025link outside website. It might be a good place to start reading, to get a sense of what awaits us for Lorcana in 2026.

And today we're going to talk about the new set: Winterspell! Let's go!

Winterspell

Winterspell is the Lorcana's 11th set, and the third in the 2026-2027 rotation. That is, around june-july of next year (2027), Winterspell will no longer be legal in Core Constructed along with Fabled, Whispers in the Well, and Wilds Unknown – the latter yet be released, in April 2026.

Winterspell will have its pre-release on February 13th, and its worldwide release on February 20th. The set has 204 cards, so if there are no multicolored cards, each ink should receive exactly 34 cards.

Themes

The set has a winter theme, as the name suggests – in the northern hemisphere, winter takes place between December and March. Therefore, we know that many cards will have themes related to snow, cold, etc. Animations like Frozen and A Christmas Carol, for example, will be present in the set.

A Christmas Carol, specifically, should also be a highlight in terms of lore. In the game's ongoing story, the Ghosts of the past, present, and future will pay a visit…

New Animations

As usual, the new set also brings some animations that haven't appeared in Lorcana before!

This time, fans of Darkwing Duck and Pocahontas can celebrate, as the set will bring these animations to Lorcana for the first time. In addition, of course, to the various other animations already seen!

More Focus on Limited

An interesting new feature that should begin to be implemented in this set is a greater focus on Limited, that is, the game format where you receive an amount of sealed product and build a deck using only the cards you open.

We don't yet know the details of this. For example, whether there will be a greater focus on draft or sealed, or if there will be any specific type of support, such as pre-release kits, which are common in other card games.

The Set's First Spoilers

Some cards have already been officially spoiled, so let's get on the hype* for the set!

Amber - Angel

Before analyzing the card itself, it's crucial to highlight the Underdog ability.

Even though it may not initially seem like a keyword, such as Evasive or Boost, meaning we don't know if other cards will also have similar effects, the fact that the Lorcana design team is creating effects like this shows that they are very attentive to how the game is developing competitively.

Since practically its release, Lorcana games have tended to greatly favor whoever goes first. In previous articles, we've discussed several times that the difference between going first or second can have a difference of about 10% chance of victory! So, the fact that we can have cards that are better when played second is a good indication that they are trying to minimize this imbalance.

With these considerations, we can then specifically analyze Angel - Siren Singer! In practice, it's almost a Cinderella - Ballroom Sensation, and if you're the second to play, it's actually even better than Cinderella! Otherwise, it's more of a Singer option for the Amber ink, although somewhat weak, considering that for 2 ink we have Singers for 4, like Ursula - Vanessa.

Ruby - Graveyard of Christmas Future

In the previous set, Whispers in the Well, we saw the new Boost mechanic, which places cards under characters. Now, we know that Winterspell will have a similar mechanic, which also allows placing cards under Locations!

Graveyard of Christmas Future is interesting because it has high Willpower and passive lore generation, but it also has an effect that grants new cards to the controller. Basically, each character you move to this Location can grant you an extra card in the future.

The effect itself is somewhat slow, which suggests it's best used in control decks or even heavier midrange decks. However, since Ruby ink currently doesn't have a very clear direction in competitive play, it's difficult to say if this Location will see play in the Challenge's metagame and similar events.

Sapphire - Darkwing Duck

Darkwing Duck makes its Lorcana debut! We don't yet know how many versions of the character will appear in the set, but this spoiled Sapphire card shows great potential, especially for item decks, which haven't been very present in the last few months. Some interesting synergies with items that put themselves in the discard pile, such as Junior Woodchuck Guidebook, for example, could allow Darkwing Duck to find a place in the competitive environment.

The fact that it possesses good stats, especially defensive ones, and that the effect is obtained in addition to the lore gained with the Quest are very important, and make Darkwing Duck feel quite complete. The only caveat, of course, is that it is uninkable, which could hinder multiple copies in the deck.

Steel - Launchpad

Lastly, from the officialy spoiled cards, we have Darkwing Duck's sidekick, Launchpad! Although it has appeared in the game before, in cards related to the DuckTales franchise, we now see Launchpad directly linked to the Darkwing Duck franchise, as evidenced by its effect.

It's quite a strong effect for a 2-Drop, as it's a card draw, albeit conditional, and can eventually be repeated using cards that ready Launchpad. As explained in the previous card, we don't yet know how many versions of Darkwing Duck we'll have in the set, but if there's at least one 2 or 3-drop, especially in Steel ink, Launchpad's potential increases.

Furthermore, its stats are standard for a 2-Drop, perhaps even weaker than average, as we see many 2-Drops that are 3/3. But the big initial problem, just like with Darkwing Duck which we talked about earlier, is the fact that Launchpad is uninkable, which hinders multiple copies and can jam your hand.

Conclusion

We're still in the early stages of spoilers for Winterspell, so throughout January we'll have more cards to analyze, including some from Pocahontas, an animated film that hasn't yet had cards officially revealed.

From what we've seen, the most interesting aspect was undoubtedly the mechanic for balancing gameplay when playing second, although it's still unknown if this will be present in more cards in the collection.

In any case, Winterspell seems to develop the themes started in the last sets, and will certainly bring many more new features and impact to the competitive scene! Let's keep our eyes on it!

Best regards, and until next time!
